Pleasant View Farm Fun Day 2011

Pleasant View Farm Fun Day ~ June 11, 2011

Many gathered at Pleasant View Farm on Saturday, June 11 for the third annual Haney Farm Fun Day in Louisa, Virginia.

It was hot; sunny, with a light breeze, accomplishing to reach high  temperatures as predicted, all to be followed with an afternoon thunderstorm!  The tent, donated for the day by Gibson Auctions, was greatly appreciated and provided welcome shade to our spectators and those participants that needed a break.

The day started off with a stick-horse race, followed by a day of activity, which included draft horse plowing and mowing demonstrations, obstacle course and wagon rides, and Amish farrier demonstrations.  Thank you to Richard Redifer for providing plowing demonstrations and Billy Slingerland for providing hay mowing demonstrations.  Elam Stoltzfus, an Amish Blacksmith from Centerville, Pennsylvania, did a terrific job demonstrating horseshoeing all day long.  He did a tremendous job answering numerous questions and explaining his techniques throughout the day!  Niki and Mike McCabe, along with Dale Payton, did a terrific job demonstrating the obstacle course with their wonderful teams.  Daniel Yancy, with his mini horse Treavor, was active all day long and provided cart rides!  Cheryl Sgarrella provided wagon rides with Mary and Junior Haney’s Pioneer wagon.  The teamsters did an excellent job, despite the heat!  Thank you to the wonderful Dana Ernst for announcing!

The children had many options available to engage in activities throughout the day, including the barrel train, provided by the Kena Shriner Club, stick-horse races, pedal tractors, bean bag toss, wagon rides and the piñata!

The 4-H Club did a terrific job with the food, donated by Mary and Junior Haney.  Desserts and miscellaneous side dishes were donated by several ODDHMA members including Clarice Perkins, Rhonda Mefferd, Melanie Magner, and Marcy Bade.  We thank everyone for supporting the local 4-H Club!

The Cake Walk was a hit!  Everyone left with a beautiful cake.  We would like to thank Larry & Liz Wise, Erin Mitchell, Dylan Grimes, Clarice Perkins and Mary Haney for donating cakes for this activity.

The Benefit Auction was very successful and raised a significant amount of money that will be used to provide future clinics and sponsor future activities for the ODDHMA.  We would like to thank everyone who donated or purchased an item.  Your support is greatly appreciated!  Keith Johnson did a tremendous job auctioning all the items ~ Thank you, Keith!

Anticipation rose as we approached the drawing for the quilt!  We asked our young member, Carter Morris, to draw the winning ticket.  Many were hoping their name was displayed on the ticket!  Congratulations to Eduardo, our first place winner, Liane Brundage, our second place winner, and Ray Pollard, our third place winner.  Thank you to everyone that supported this fundraiser.  Thank you to Mary Haney for donating the quilt and pillow and making this possible!

We also recognized Daniel Yancey with an ODDHMA Junior Teamster Badge during announcements after the auction.  Daniel has went above and beyond this year in his participation at each of our events!  He has also participated in parades and youth clinics, along with appearing at the Gordonsville Rodeo on Saturday evening, all with Art Magner!  We encourage all youths to participate and grow with us in all our activities!

There were so many people who contributed to the success of this day!  Todd Morris worked very hard with Mary and Junior to get the farm ready for us!  Don Payne volunteered to help on Friday set up the tent, little did he know we would work him hard ~ driving tent stakes!  Art & Melanie Magner, Victor Taylor, Jackie Hicks, and Clarice Perkins all pitched in to help!

Good company and an easy camaraderie was enjoyed by all.  All in all, it was a delightful day on the farm! Thank you to Mary and Junior Haney for hosting a terrific event!
