Bud Whitten's Ride & Drive ~ July 21, 2012

Bud Whitten’s Ride and Drive

July 21, 2012

Teamsters and riders met early on Saturday, July 21st at Bud and Doris Whitten’s farm in Dillwyn, Virginia.  Overnighter’s had enjoyed a scrumptious breakfast at the lodge.  Questionable weather kept several teamsters from participating.

For several ODDHMA members, this would be our first trip around the trail and we were excited!  Our group started out down through the field, winding around to the paved road.  Proceeding a short distance down the road, we turned off on a nice wooded trail and would traverse the creek at various times as we meandered along the wooded trails to open pasture fields.

Despite being caught in a downpour, everyone was in a good mood!  As we were going along the trail, we encountered a downed tree blocking our path.  But Bud was prepared for such an obstacle.  He had carried his chainsaw along and the guys quickly cleared the tree and reopened the trail.  We stopped at the pavilion to rest the horses and mules. After a short break, we were off again!

Upon return to the trailers, we all unharnessed or unsaddled.  Then everyone pitched in to help prepare a wonderful lunch provided by Bud and his friends.  Lunch consisted of barbecued chicken, large hot dogs, fresh hamburgers, corn on the cob, fresh cut fries, and a variety of potluck dishes.  We had a relaxing time at lunch and all agreed, despite the weather, the trail and company could have been better!

Thank you to Bud and Doris Whitten for hosting a terrific ride and drive at their place!

Jesse and Janet Wise have invited the Old Dominion Draft Horse and Mule Association to enjoy a wonderful day at their farm, Trodelgeld Farm, located in beautiful Culpeper, Virginia. ODDHMA members and guests are invited to join us for a relaxing ride and drive over gently rolling hills and lush green fields in the morning. You may even catch a glimpse of a bear, deer, an osprey or bald eagles as we drive around the trails and through the woods. Following the ride and drive, we will enjoy a delicious potluck luncheon. We have some terrific cooks. Please bring something you like to share with everyone! A designated area will be available for plowing if the teamsters are interested in plowing after lunch.

Jesse and Janet do have one request. They have requested that we come out and enjoy ourselves.

We are extremely grateful to Jesse and Janet for opening their farm to the ODDHMA. Please support our club’s activities and the individuals in the community that allow us to share our draft equine and/or provide us with beautiful settings in which to enjoy our animals!

Please RSVP: Cheryl (703) 431-7992 or Mary (540) 967-2678

Please visit our Trodelgeld Farm Page for directions and additional information.
